The Guard Needs You!
Sunlight, streaming in through the slats of their room at Aram’s Crown, woke the party early the next day. The sounds of the bustling market outside were welcome after days of fire and blood. Wasting little time to get on with their day, the party set out into the streets, and quickly spotted WANTED posters detailing Chloe’s trip to the magic shop. With a heavy (though not quite that heavy) conscience, Chloe decided to turn herself in. She carefully explained to the magic shop owner that she hadn’t stolen that wand, the shop keep had given it to her. At hearing this, the magic shop owner thanked Chloe for her honesty and returning the wand, and vowed that the shop keep would never work in any magic shop in Korvosa.
Satisfied that Chloe was no longer a fugitive, the party set off for Citadel Volshyenek, and their meeting with Commander Kroft of the Guard. They jostled past the growing market crowds, and continued down the street to the sounds of the market crier shouting the day’s news. Blood, curfews, warnings, and a funeral procession in a few days. Also blood sports at the Kendall Arena. This news stopped the party in their tracks, and they quickly made their way over to the Plaza of Scions. After a short conversation with the proprietor, the party was able to sign up to the event under the banner of the Church of Iomedae. They were told to report back three days before the Founding Festival, for the first day of competition.
The sun had nearly reached the high point of it’s journey when the party approached the main gates of the citadel. they were escorted through a hot dusty courtyard smelling of the day’s catch to an attractive but visibly tired women in red plate armour: Commander Cressida Kroft. After quick introductions, Kroft ushered the party up to her offices for a more private conversation. There she explained that several groups of guards had deserted in the recent riots. One such group had taken to calling themselves the “Cow Hammer Boys” and had holed up in an abandoned meat shop up in Northpoint. Cressida stressed the need to capture these guards rather than cut them down. She needed answers; needed to know why her guards had deserted.
Wasting little time, the party set out through the streets once more. This time, in search of “All the World’s Meat”. They ventured through the dockyards, and for once weren’t attacked by Duster gang members though eagle-eyed Markus and Hoodlum both spotted filthy orphans moving to pickpocket the group. After being offered a hot meal and a roof over their heads, Aron convinced the children to head to The Orphanage of the Many in South Shore. Once in Northpoint, they were quickly pointed in the right direction, and were surprised to find a meat shop in steady operation. It seemed that the guards were giving away cuts of meat to the hungry citizens. Something didn’t smell right, and it wasn’t just the rancid cuts in the window. How did these guards get all this meat? Where were the animals? The party set up across the street, and waited for night to fall and the line of customers to go home.
The rest of the operation went smoothly enough. The party ambushed a group of guards as they were leaving the shop, then quietly stole in and took out the remaining Cow Hammers. After a second fight with the remaining guards and hungry reefclaw, the party was sickened to find human bones and skulls among the cast-off pieces on the killing floor. They resolutely tore through the rest of the shop looking for the leader of the gang: Verik Vancaskerkin. They found him in the shop’s upstairs office, managed to avoid a fight, and placed him under arrest under their authority. Among the straw bedding and scattered papers, the party found a sheet with a list of names pinned to a table with a beautiful silver dagger. The party took both, and vowed to investigate their meaning.
It would be another several bells before dawn could drive out the Korvosan night, and so the party decided to split up with Aron escorting Verik back to the Citadel, and the rest of the party scouring the shop for evidence.
