Of Sharks and Spiders – Loss & Grief
Aron’s hands were bloody and torn by the time he finished ripping apart the storeroom in search of a secret passage. They found one neatly tucked away in the false wall of a cabinet leading into the depths of the sewers but it had taken them too much time to find it. The sewers within were quiet, and several squads of temple guard were sent in to search out the kidnappers. Aron wanted to help as well but was rebuffed by the guard and told to stay with the other orphans.
He stalked over to the dead kidnapper in hopes of finding some clue as to where they could have taken Donna. A small collection of priests and clerics had gathered, and one offered to cast Speak with the Dead on the body. After the necessary herbs had been burned, and words spoken, the corpse shuddered to life. Aron immediately launched into the interrogation demanding to know who had hired him, where they had taken Donna, and why they were doing this. Dead eyes gazed without seeing at the ceiling, and blood-encrusted lips parted. Among the rasping came the replies “_Cinnabar_”, “_Eel’s End_”, “_Contracts_”.
Convinced that Barsavi was behind this attack, Aron quickly tried to muster the priests and clerics into fighting form. Though sympathetic to his plight, the clergy would not help over and above offering healing and restoration to push back the fatigue that was threatening to drop Aron where he stood. Since no help was forthcoming from the temple, Aron made his way to Citadel Volshyenek to beg the help of the Guard.
While passing through the Gold Market, Aron met up with Sergeant Reshi who was busy with his squad passing out grain. Upon hearing of the attack, Reshi’s squad quickly finished with their delivery, and escorted Aron to the Citadel’s gates. There Sergeant Gau and his squad stood waiting at the portcullis to relieve Reshi’s group after their night’s shift.
Aron pleaded for a full assault on Eel’s End to rescue Donna but Sergeant Gau couldn’t sanction an attack. There was little direct evidence linking Barsavi to the abduction, and Eel’s End paid their vice tax regularly, and on time. Aron persuaded him to begin an investigation into the matter though, and Gau offered to help with Aron’s request for a boat. He directed Aron towards extended family in Trail’s End who happened to own a small fishing skiff.
“A handful of people on a leaky boat out to save the world, eh?” Reshi chimed in. “Well, we’re off-watch now, and I still have to repay a debt owed to Chloe and Markus for bringing down that Otyugh. If you wanted, my men and I would be happy to get his guard’s attention. Should help you out a bit, and get some of his men off the main boat for a time.”
As a blood-red sun broke over the Citadel’s walls, and with the beginnings of a rescue plan in place, Aron set off in search of his friends.
